Low exhaust temperature, failed sensors, a dosing problem, EGR malfunction, excessive soot production, boost or fuel faults and exhaust leaks can prevent a successful regeneration. Cleaning or replacing the filter without diagnosing the cause may lead to another restriction and more downtime.

Regeneration, cleaning, repair or replacement?
A regeneration burns accumulated soot when the system can reach and maintain the required conditions. Professional off-truck cleaning addresses ash and contamination that regeneration cannot remove. A damaged, cracked, melted or oil-saturated filter may require deeper evaluation or replacement.
Repeated forced regenerations are not a substitute for diagnosis. If soot returns quickly, the engine may be producing too much soot or the aftertreatment system may be unable to complete regeneration correctly. The most cost-effective repair is the one that addresses both the restriction and its cause.

DPF, DEF and EGR FAQs
Can a forced regeneration fix every clogged DPF?
No. Regeneration burns soot but does not remove accumulated ash, repair damaged filters or correct sensor, fuel, boost, DEF or EGR faults. Diagnosis determines whether regeneration is appropriate.
How do I know whether the DPF needs cleaning or replacement?
Filter loading, pressure behavior, contamination, physical damage and the underlying fault all matter. A filter may be cleanable, while a cracked, melted or heavily contaminated unit may require another solution.
Why does my truck keep asking for a regeneration?
Frequent requests can result from duty cycle, excess soot production, low exhaust temperature, sensor or wiring faults, EGR problems, boost leaks, fuel issues or a filter that has reached its ash capacity.
What causes DEF derate warnings?
Possible causes include low or contaminated fluid, pump or dosing faults, heaters, crystallized lines, NOx or temperature sensors, wiring, SCR efficiency problems and related engine faults.
Do you diagnose NOx sensor and SCR codes?
Yes. The code, live readings, wiring, exhaust conditions and related faults should be evaluated before a sensor or major component is condemned.
Can aftertreatment diagnosis be performed roadside?
Some scanning and system evaluation can be performed roadside, but filter removal, cleaning and many repairs require shop equipment. Call dispatch with the truck location and warning information.
